In honor of Black History Month, and in celebration of the 42nd Annual Black History Program, The Petaluma Historical Library & Museum and Petaluma Blacks for Community Development are pleased to present “Black History: Remember, Educate, Celebrate”, an exhibit on display at the museum February 8 through March 15.

“Black History Remember, Educate, Celebrate“-2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the Fifteenth Amendment which gave the right of black men to vote following the Civil War. It also marks the centennial of the Nineteenth amendment and the culmination of the women’s suffrage movement.

Remember: Africans Americans and the Vote. Black males were given the vote in 1870 and the ratification of the 19 th Amendment gave black women the right to vote, but were they really able to cast their ballots or are there still some road blocks today? The exhibit will have pictures and information about the African American struggle for the vote.

Educate: Major events in American history attributed to African Americans. Learn about the inventions, the black women computers during the race for space and the many records set by African American sports figures.

Celebrate – the legacy of African Americans that have died recently (Tony Morrison, Diahann Carroll, Elijah Cummings)
