From October 8 through November 8, our galleries will once again be filled with altars and artwork for our annual Día de los Muertos exhibition, presented in partnership with El Día de los Muertos Petaluma. Created by community members, the ofrendas are deeply personal expressions of remembrance. But together, they also speak to something universal: the ways we carry stories, traditions, and the memories of those we love forward.
That spirit of memory and connection runs through a full month of programs this year.
We’ll begin with an Opening Reception on October 10, welcoming the community to experience this year’s altars and artwork. On October 17, Poesía del Recuerdo/Poetry of Remembrance offers another way to reflect, remember, and share stories. And on October 24, the annual Candlelight Procession & Celebration brings the community together, with the Museum remaining open into the evening.
We’re also introducing something new this year: A Spirited Tasting: Mezcal, Morsels & Día de los Muertos on October 16.
Featuring La Luna Mezcal and Benesin Mezcal, this special 21+ evening brings together four featured mezcals and four food pairings, along with the opportunity to meet the people behind the spirits and hear stories of agave, place, craft, and tradition. Guests can move between the tasting tables in the Garden Court and the Museum galleries, experiencing the ofrendas and artwork along the way.
It’s an opportunity to think about food and drink as more than flavors. They can carry stories of landscape and agriculture, family and community, migration and memory, connecting people and places across generations.
And just as our Día de los Muertos programming winds down, another story of remembrance—of a decidedly different kind—is waiting in the wings…
On October 30, we’ll revive one of Petaluma’s more unusual traditions: The Houdini Séance, held this year on the eve of the 100th anniversary of Harry Houdini’s death. Inspired by the séances organized by legendary Petaluman Bill Soberanes beginning in 1964—many held right here at the Museum—the evening promises a little history, a little mystery, and perhaps a surprise or two. After all, some traditions are too good to stay buried.
