Petaluma has a unique and fascinating history as a bustling river town during and after the Gold Rush\, then as the “Chicken and Egg Capital of the World\,” and now as a town that loves its history. Learn about Petaluma’s incredible architecture (including 8 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places) and other important and interesting facets of our town’s history. You’ll be informed by your docent’s historical knowledge and entertained by their characters’ stories. \nParticipant(s) with special needs can contact the Museum several days before the walk they have signed up to take\,  and they will be able to participate fully in the tour.\nFree\, suggested donation of $10 appreciated. Enjoy music\, history\, refreshments\, and community\, plus the ringing of the historic Korbel Bell. \nThursday July 4\, 2024\n10:00 – 11:15 A.M.\nOn the steps of the Museum – and afterwards in the museum’s courtyard\nFree\, Please Register\n \nEach year since 1962\, communities across the country gather on July 4th and simultaneously ring bells 13 times to remind us of the original colonies and founding of our country. The Petaluma Museum commemorates this annual tradition with music\, history\, and the ringing of the historic Korbel Bell. Following the ceremony\, enjoy refreshments and community under the beautiful oak tree in the museum’s courtyard.

Personal artifacts from local Petaluma pioneer women will be on display\, including journals\, bonnets and dresses\, a hoop skirt form\, a blanket chest\, and more. Additionally\, the exhibition includes forty diverse portraits of unidentified women\, representing the thousands of pioneers whose stories were never recorded and are lost to time.

Refunds have been given to all current ticket holders. \nHear women’s firsthand accounts from the days when California was part of Spain and Mexico. \nSunday\, July 21 4:30 – 6:00\nPetaluma Historical Library & Museum\n20 Fourth Street (Corner of 4th & B Street)\nPetaluma\, CA\nCost – $20\n\nTestimonios: Early California through the Eyes of Women\, 1815-1848\nWith Rose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz\nJoin Rose Marie Beebe\, Professor Emerita of Spanish Literature at Santa Clara University\, and Robert M. Senkewicz\, Professor Emeritus of History at Santa Clara University\, as they share the fascinating stories of the women of pre-statehood California. When in the early 1870s historian Hubert Howe Bancroft sent interviewers out to gather oral histories from the pre-statehood gentry of California\, he did not count on one thing: the women. When the men were not available\, the interviewers collected the stories of the women of the household—sometimes almost as an afterthought. These interviews were eventually archived at the University of California\, Berkeley\, though many were all but forgotten. Having lived through the gold rush and seen their country change so drastically\, these women understood the need to tell the full story of the people and the places that were their California. The event will begin with a half-hour reception. \nRose Marie and Bob have collaborated on a number of books on the history of Spanish and Mexican California including\, The History of Alta California; Lands of Promise and Despair: Chronicles of Early California\, 1535–1846; Testimonios: Early California through the Eyes of Women\, 1815–1848; Junípero Serra: California\, Indians\, and the Transformation of a Missionary; a complete translation of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo’s Recuerdos; and Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo: Life in Spanish\, Mexican\, and American California. \nRose Marie and Bob have received numerous teaching and scholarship awards at Santa Clara University. In 2015 they were recognized with the University Award for Sustained Excellence in Scholarship. They have also received awards from The Bancroft Library\, the Historical Society of Southern California\, the California Mission Studies Association\, and the California Council for the Promotion of History. Rose Marie received a year-long fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the Vallejo project. In 2019 they were awarded the Oscar Lewis Award for Western History by the Book Club of California for their book Junípero Serra: California\, Indians\, and the Transformation of a Missionary.
