SUMMARY:Current Exhibit: Renaissance Science\, Magic\, and Medicine in Harry Potter’s World
DESCRIPTION:November 8 – November 30\nThurs. – Sunday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\n20 4th Street (Corner of 4th  and B Streets)\nThe Harry Potter book series features magic that is based partially on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science\, including alchemy\, astrology\, and natural philosophy. Incorporating the work of several 15th- and 16th-century thinkers\, the series examines ethical topics such as the desire for knowledge\, the effects of prejudice\, and the responsibility that comes with power. Informative panels use the collections of the National Library of Medicine to explore Harry Potter’s world and its roots in Renaissance magic\, science\, and medicine. The Museum will add to the exhibition from our own collection of medical artifacts\, botanical journals\, and other objects that would fit right in at Hogwarts!

SUMMARY:Reading & Discussion with Author Frances Rivetti
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a lively chat with acclaimed author Frances Rivetti about her latest book\, Floating in the Middle! \nWednesday\, November 19 · 5 – 7pm PST\nPetaluma Historical Library & Museum\n20 4th Street Petaluma (Corner of 4th and B St.)\nThis is a free event. RSVPs are appreciated.\nWe’re thrilled to launch the Petaluma Museum’s new book club\, exploring the stories that shape our world. Our first selection\, Floating in the Middle\, is the highly anticipated third novel from award-winning British-American author and Petaluman Frances Rivetti. This gripping work of domestic noir meets climate suspense as a group of longtime friends reunite for a weekend on California’s crumbling coast to plan their ideal intentional community—only to discover that building utopia may require darker compromises than they imagined. \nSet against the dramatic backdrop of the eroding Sonoma Coast\, Floating in the Middle follows friends whose weekend retreat becomes a pressure cooker of buried secrets\, conflicting visions\, and mounting desperation as the changing landscape mirrors the instability of their relationships. When environmental crisis becomes the catalyst for both hope and betrayal\, the novel asks: How far would you go to create the community of your dreams? \nPick up your copy at a bookstore near you beginning November 1\, then join us at the Museum on November 19\, 5-7pm\, for a reading and discussion with the author. \n  \n
