DESCRIPTION:The Petaluma Poetry Walk Returns!\nSunday September 17\, 2023 at 5:00 pm\nThe Petaluma Historical Library & Museum is thrilled to host the 5:00 reading.  We are excited to welcome Tony Aldorando\, Georgina Gabriela Tello Bugarin and Ernesto M. Garay\nPetaluma Poetry Walk 2023\nPetaluma Historical Library & Museum\n20 4th Street\, Petaluma – (Corner of 4th & B St.)\n5:00 PM\n  \nTony Aldarondo has performed music and poetry in venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area\, overseas\, and once\, while standing up on a JetBlue airplane! He is an actor and a voiceover artist. He toured with the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival for two seasons and studied theatre at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. He attended San Francisco State University and studied dramatic arts and poetry at Cal State East Bay in Hayward\, California. Tony is the author of two poetry books: Big Heart Poet and We Are Poets\, both published by Hummingword Press. He has taught poetry and theatre workshops throughout the Bay Area. His favorite thing in the world is being the best dad he can be to his two kids. \n  \nGeorgina Gabriela Tello Bugarin was born in Xichu\, Guanajuato\, Mexico. She attended Santa Rosa Junior College\, where she completed ESL (English as a Second Language). Subsequently\, she obtained an AA in Paralegal Studies\, an AA in Social and Behavioral Science\, and a Child Development Certificate. Georgina works as a Bilingual Sexual Assault Advocate at Verity\, the Sonoma County Rape Crisis\, Trauma\, and Healing Center. In her free time\, she writes poetry. Georgina writes her poems in Spanish and then translates them into English. Her poem “Between Tears” was published in English in California’s Best Emerging Poets (2020)\, an anthology compiled and edited by Z Publishing House. Currently\, she lives in Petaluma\, California\, with her family. \n  \nErnesto M. Garay’s writings have appeared in the DI-VȇrRSέ-City Anthology 2020\, Redwood Writers 2016 Poetry Anthology\, Pterodáctilo\, and Ethnic Studies Journal. Garay is the author of a collection of poetry titled Reverberating Voices. He was “La Revista Bilingüe: La Voz’s “Person of the Month” in Sonoma County for March 2020\, a 2019-2020 Sonoma County\, California\, Discovered Award Recipient in Literary Arts\, and a Full-Time CHicano Ethnic Studies Instructor at Sierra College. From outside and in\, you will see the stained glass windows\, sanctuaries\, and distinctive architecture. \nAt each location\, you will learn about the building’s architecture along with a brief history of the church. Please wear comfortable and safe attire to ease in walking. \nWhat will parking be like?\nSome homes will not have direct street parking. Side streets may be your best option for parking. After describing the scope of these surveys\, she points out that funding for historical surveys is often lacking in small towns. She provides an example of a small town that used community volunteers to complete a windshield survey\, followed by a formal historical evaluation by a consultant. The surveying took a while but was a cost-effective solution for identifying resources within this small community. \n

Henderson\nSharon is a powerful singer and the lead vocalist in “Gosperational” and R & B band\, “Reflection”. She has been singing in church choirs since the age of three. Her earliest influences were Mahalia Jackson\, Rev James Cleveland and the great singers at her home church. As a teenager\, singing with the award-winning choir The Voices of Christ\, she had the opportunity to sing under the direction of gospel luminaries such as Reverend James Cleveland\, Helen J.H. Stephens\, and with great singers such as Reverend Daryl Coley. Sharon was blessed to travel and sing as a member of the Voices of Christ and Northern California Gospel Music Workshop of America. \nSharon has continued her career\, becoming a sought-after professional singer in the East Bay. For 16 years Sharon was a popular soloist with Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and is featured on their CD entitled “Rejoice“. Receiving rave reviews from the San Francisco Examiner\, Sharon’s moving a Cappella rendition of “Lawd How Come Me Heah” is a featured selection on her debut CD\, “Through It All”. \nNow as lead vocalist for the R&B band Reflection\, Sharon is able to continue her music ministry by singing at churches and in such night spots s as Yoshi’s in Oakland and Caffe Trieste in Berkeley. Dorian Bartley and her amazing ensemble will treat you to an evening of wonderful vintage Jazz and R & B. You will want to get up and dance. The program will start at 7:00 with the doors opening at 6:30. Snacks and drinks provided downstairs for $35.00. If you want to be pampered\, upstairs seating is $40.00 and includes Champagne and an amazing view. The tickets are available for purchase online at the Petaluma Historical Library and Museum website or at the museum. Free. \nEVENTS AT OTHER LOCATIONS IN THE COMMUNITY\nFebruary 16\, 2023 – 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Polly Klaas Community Theater\, 417 Western Ave. West African Drumming and Dance by Amadou Camara and Marie Soumah. Two 30 minute sections. This performance is in conjunction with Arts Alive\, The Polly Klaas Community Theater and Petaluma Blacks for Community Development. Free and open to the public. \nFebruary 19\, 2023 – 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. – Museum of Sonoma County\, 425 Seventh Street\, Santa Rosa\, CA. “Art in Conversation: Black Resistance in Contemporary Art”.  Four contemporary Black artists of Northern California will share their art via video while in a conversation discussing Black resistance\, their artwork and how it is perceived in the world today. This will be a one day\, “must see” art exhibit. Cost: $10 general admission\, $5 members\, and $7 seniors and youth. Sponsored by the Sonoma County Museum and Petaluma Blacks for Community Development. \nFebruary 25\, 2023 – 5:30 p.m. – Black History Program\, New Life Christian Church\, 1310 Clegg St.\, Petaluma. This will be our 45th Anniversary Program. Expect to be entertained and educated. We will have something for everyone in the family. The program is free and open to the public. We are planning for an in-person program with possible live screening. \nMarch 19\, 2023 – 4:00 p.m. – Sharon Henderson and the Reflection Band\, singing Gospel and R&B. \nPolly Klaas Community Theater\, 417 Western Ave\, Petaluma. Cost $40.00\, includes refreshments. Sharon has been singing since the age of three. Born in Detroit to an African American father and white mother\, Dorian grew up in a family that valued music as an expression of art\, identity and politics. She loves jazz and its balance between creative freedom and structure\, the fun of swing and phrasing. She also works in other musical styles: country-roots with Foxes in the Henhouse\, classical with Gravenstein Mandolin Ensemble and eclectic freelance groups around the Bay Area. Dorian studied at the University of Michigan and UC Berkeley and taught music in Petaluma’s public schools. \nBOB JOHNS (piano/trumpet) Bob’s early piano lessons grew into a desire to improvise like his father who played jazz trumpet in big bands and small groups. When he arrived in San Francisco after serving in the Navy\, Bob found like-minded players who formed the fusion group Nexus\, playing in San Francisco and the East Bay through the 80s. He played keyboard and trombone for a time in the African group\, Hedzoleh Soundz. Bob plays each Tuesday night with his jazz buddies at the Comstock Saloon in San Francisco’s North Beach. He hosts an Open Mic once a month in Petaluma at the United Methodist Church. \nDAVID SCOTT (sax/flute/vocals) left his hit rock & roll band in Australia and boarded a ship at age 18 to head for New Caledonia as a jazz musician. He settled for 10 years in Tahiti\, playing jazz\, rock and island music as well as learning French. David came to Sonoma County in 1989 and joined Gator Beat (now known as Gator Nation) playing Cajun & Zydeco music. He developed a unique style of interwoven horn and accordion and has mastered the technique of circular breathing (continuous tone without interruption) on his saxophone. David is a founder of Collaboration Jazz Band which performs locally. \nTONY BLAKE (drums) was born and raised in San Francisco. Eclectic in his percussive expression\, Tony is comfortable in symphony orchestras\, small jazz ensembles\, folk\, rock or world music groups. He has developed a playing style that draws on many traditions. Finding the common pulse to support the music inspires him\, no matter what the setting. Tony lives in Petaluma and works as an Environmental Scientist. DESCRIPTION:Lucy Kortum’s Contributions Acknowledged in the Congressional Record\n(All Videos Courtesy of Kaye Chandler)\n\n \nMore Videos Featuring Lucy:\nInterview with Lucy:\nhttps://vimeo.com/294950226\nCarnegie Museum Grand opening  ceremony honoring Lucy Kortum  October 6\, 2018\nhttps://vimeo.com/294949041\nObituary\nLucy Kortum\nAugust 8\, 1928 – November 30\, 2022 \nLucy Kortum\, a historian who championed the importance of local and statewide architectural preservation\, died on November 30\, 2022\, at her home in Petaluma. She was born on August 8\, 1928\, in Coronado\, California\, where her father was stationed as a Naval aviator. She had vivid memories from the years before and during World War II\, when her mother\, driving alone\, took her and her brother on numerous cross-country journeys between naval bases to catch up with her father’s frequent redeployments. \nShe attended Pomona College after the war and then moved to San Francisco with some of her college classmates. After working in San Francisco for a few years\, she married Bill Kortum in 1953. In the ensuing years Bill and Lucy became effective advocates for environmental protection on issues such as the battle to save Bodega Head from a nuclear power plant in the early 1960s and the prolonged effort (beginning in the late 1960s) to preserve access to the California coastline and to save it from overdevelopment. Beyond her activity as an environmentalist\, she was independently known for her work in architectural preservation\, both locally and throughout California. In 1990 she completed a thesis for a master’s degree in history at Sonoma State University. Entitled “Carnegie Library Development in California and the Architecture it Produced\, 1899-1921\,” the thesis resulted in the addition of ten California Carnegie libraries to the National Register of Historic Places\, and still sets the standard by which libraries achieve such designation. Her efforts also resulted in the addition to the National Register of the Petaluma Silk Mill (built in 1892 near the Lakeville Highway and what is now Sunset Park)\, saving this significant structure from demolition and leading most recently to its repurposed preservation as a hotel which has been in operation since 2018. \nLucy and Bill found the life of activism that they shared to be invigorating and stimulating. For example\, when the California Coastal Trail Association recognized Lucy in 2018 as one of the women responsible for protecting the California coastline\, she said that the work “was not only inspiring and important\, but it was fun.” Indeed\, her sense of fun (along with her optimism and enthusiasm) was a primary reason that so many friends looked forward to visiting Lucy and Bill at the home they built in rural Petaluma\, eager to discuss anything from travel\, food\, books and winemaking to state and local politics and environmental issues. Late in life\, the topic could even turn to her beloved Golden State Warriors. Her interests also extended to what was happening in the lives of her family and friends\, who fondly recall profound one-on-one conversations-free of any political or environmental agenda-where her active engagement and meaningful questions often helped them to better understand themselves. Those who knew her appreciated her kindness\, her recognition of the importance of fairness\, and her ability to put disputes and irritations into perspective. \nShe also maintained a close connection with Sonoma State University. In addition to earning a master’s degree there she was one of the first employees of the SSU Nursing Department and worked there for several years as the program grew in stature. In addition\, the Sonoma County Historical Society recognized her achievements in the field of historic preservation and research by awarding her the Jeanne Thurlow Miller Individual Award in 2005. The next year\, she was named Petaluma’s “Good Egg\,” an acknowledgment of her volunteer work for the Petaluma Historical Library and Museum. Until recently\, she served as a board member of the Petaluma Historical Society and Friends of the Petaluma Library. Her fellow historians informally recognized her accomplishments by occasionally referring to Bill Kortum as “Lucy Kortum’s husband.” \nBill died in 2014. Lucy is survived by her children (Frank (Ellin Kavanagh) of Glendale\, California\, Julie Groves (Barry) of Los Gatos\, California\, and Sam (Hyun Ja Shin) of New Haven\, Connecticut)\, and five grandchildren.\nA memorial service is planned for a later date. In the meantime\, the family suggests that contributions be made to Sonoma County Conservation Action and/or Coastwalk California. \nPublished by Press Democrat from Dec. 4 to Dec. 9\, 2022.

What a perfect way to begin the holiday season\, with beauty and song! \nCarols have a show time of 5pm or 6:30pm. Tour houses will open their doors following the caroling from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.\, so tour- and concert-goers can plan their evening to suit their schedule. \nThe tour will present two elegant Victorian homes in the Oakhill-Brewster Historic District\, conveniently located on the same block for an easy touring experience.
